Another Season's Best Finish for Thong at Sportsland Sugo

Once again Thong was behind the wheel for Q1 and it also marks his 7th consecutive Top 16 qualifying result which brings the #33 EVA GT-R into Q2. Thong’s teammate Shinya Michimi then placed the car 7th in Q2 and determined the starting grid for Sunday’s race.

The start saw Thong rapidly catching up the field as the X Works / EVA GT-R changed to wet tires on the starting grid when rain hit the track just minutes before the formation lap. Turning out to be the correct strategy, Thong held 6th place until the mandatory pit stop.

Michimi then held the position all the way until checkered flag and matched the team’s best result after Thailand in June. Thong said “It is nice to finish in the points again and i think it was critical that we made the correct tire choice right at the start. Many cars struggled for grip on slicks and i am lucky that i wasn’t one of them. It also proved that our race pace is as strong as we are in the dry as this year we had enormous amount of bad luck in the rain. Either involving in some unavoidable accidents or simply being at the wrong spot for safety car strategies, so it was a slight relief for myself and the team to finish in 6th.”
