Podium Finish for Team Hong Kong in Portimao 24 Hours 2022
Thong and his fellow Hong Kong drivers came home 2nd in their Portimao 24 Hours debut
Marks Thong’s 12th 24 Hours race and back to back podium after Fuji 24 Hours victory
Thong and his fellow Hong Kong drivers took 2nd place in TCE class after a hard battle in the TCE class together with Belgian squad AC Motorsport. It also marks Thong’s 2nd appearance in a full Hong Kong driver lineup after 2018 where he also finished 2nd in GT4 Class in the Dubai 24 Hours.
Thong shared his duty together with fellow TCR driver Andy Yan and 2 bronze rated drivers David Lau and Tommy Ku. The squad started 5th in class on Saturday and maintained steady pace throughout the race, various challenges showed up throughout the first 12 hours where #188 was penalised due to several regulations infringement which dropped them down to 5th. However during nightfall, Thong and Yan shared most of the stints and managed to bring the car back up to a potential podium spot and was sitting comfortably in 2nd after the night stints. Whilst holding 2nd in class, the #188 Audi RS3 LMS DSG wasn’t trouble free whereas Thong and Yan has to managed a malfunctioned differential in the gearbox that has proven costly to the race pace but the Hong Kong squad held off challenges from the 3rd position Wolf Racing, running the latest generation of the Audi RS3 LMC SEQ, and successfully took the checkered flag 2nd in TCR class and TCE Division. They came short of victory from the latest 2022 spec SEAT Leon Cupra TCR ran by BBR.
