Thong joins Grid Motorsport from Round.5 of the 2022 Eneos Super Taikyu season in Motegi onwards to aid their championship bid after having won with the team’s closest championship rival Helm Motorsport in the highlight of the season, Fuji SuperTec 24 Hours in June.
The newly formed Grid Motorsport owned by the team’s A driver Martin Berry is serviced under the majority of crews and engineers from Hirix Racing back in 2020 when Thong won his first Fuji 24 Hours and the Super Taikyu title. With the aim of regaining the championship lead and to win this year’s title, Thong was recruited to the team for the remaining 3 rounds for Motegi, Okayama and the season finale in Suzuka.
Grid Motorsport #888 Mercedes AMG GT3 EVO
The #888 Mercedes AMG GT3 Evo of Grid Motorsport started the 5 Hours of Motegi from 3rd position but quickly dropped to 5th but managed to fight back to 4th before settling into a steady pace for the opening stint of the 5 Hours race before handing the car to team owner Martin Berry.
A driver Martin Berry did a phenomenal stint to minimise the disadvantages he had against the professional drivers during the same stint and passed the car to C driver Shinichi Takagi in 3rd for the 3rd hour. At one point the Grid Motorsport crew was looking to settle for a podium position until the race leader spun out of the race and promoted Thong and Grid motorsport to 2nd overall with 2 hours to go.
Thong resumed his duty for the final stint and closed up a 16 seconds deficit to the race leader and eventually taking the checkered flag while having to push hard to fence off the hard chasing #81 Daishin Nismo GT-R but still maintained a 11 seconds lead across the line.
Motegi marks the 2nd win for Grid Motorsport this season and also for Thong personally
“I am pleased for this result, luck was on our side as we haven’t got the quickest car all weekend but our pace was steady and the team made no mistakes and had good strategies, hence we were able to maximise on what we have and with a bit of luck we won the race and it is a team effort after all.
I am glad with how the team worked together this weekend despite being my first weekend with the team. We had good communication and spirit and our goal is to score maximum points and looking to bring home this year’s title.
Thank you Grid Motorsport for this opportunity and i am looking forward to be achieving more with this team in the future. “
Round.6 of the Eneos Super Taikyu will be held in Okayama International Circuit from 14th to 16th of October. With 3 Hours of Okayama and Suzuka 5 Hours for the finale coming up. Grid Motorsport and Thong are aiming to maximise their chances for the 2022 title.
