Double Class podium for Thong and FM Motorsport debut in Thailand Super Series

  • Double podium for the Shaun and FM Motorsport in Thailand Super Series Debut

  • Thong showed race winning pace and took home the fastest lap of Race 2

  • Short of a win but showed promising team work throughout the weekend

FM Motorsport entered full season of the 2023 B-Quik Thailand Super Series season as the only foreign team in the GTM Class. Team owner Simon Chan is joined by Shaun Thong as the Hong Kong paired entered the first race with a goal of a podium finish for the season opener in Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand where Shaun is no stranger of from his previous visits in GT World Challenge Asia, GT Asia and Asian Le Mans Series.

The team entered a single Porsche 992 GT3 Cup for the GTM Pro Class aiming to challenge some of the best local Thailand team around to fight for the crown. Thong started off the weekend by laying down the fastest lap of both Free Practice 1 and 2 on Friday before missing pole position and saw him started from 2nd for Race 2 after a Balance of Performance change by the organiser at the last minute.

Team owner Simon Chan started Race 1 in 8th position and did an equally good stint to pass the car to Shaun and with the remaining 30 minutes he managed to take the checkered flag P2 in GTM Pro Class. On Sunday’s Race 2 Thong started from the front row and immediately stated to challenge for the lead after an intense 15 minutes wheel to wheel battle with the leader and eventually taking the race lead with 15 seconds lead and a fastest lap before handing the car to Simon Chan for the 2nd stint. Unfortunately a late safety car denied the chance of the Fire Monkey Motorsport’s debut win after the strategy failed to play out due to the situation. Still the pair came home P3 in Class to complete a double class podium for the team’s Thailand Super Series debut.

“Thailand Super Series has been gaining attention in Asia lately, even thought the grid quantity is relatively low compare to the other championships, but the quality is here and I am still seeing alot of familiar top Asian drivers around the grid. All in all I am super pleased with our pace especially coming in last minute against all the top local teams. Managing to lay down a good reference from the beginning of the weekend meant alot to me and to the team as well and specially the pace we had in Race 2 was just so promising that we believe we can fight for more throughout the season. Apart from being the driver it is also my pleasure to work with the team and to able to use my past experience to grow an build this team together from the beginning. Once again thank you Fire Monkey Motorsport for the opportunities and I am looking forward to be achieving more results together.” said Thong.

Round 3 and 4 of the Thailand Super Series will return in June at the toughest track in Thailand, the streets of Bangsaen. Stay tuned for more updates and information.
